Detailed analysis of the development of intermetallic hardfacing coaBngs processed by in-situ synthesis parBcularly, the processing of aluminide and silicide coaBngs by in-situ synthesis is given. MoBvaBon behind the use of intermetallic coaBngs and the challenges of their processing that make in-situ synthesis by directed energy deposiBon, using Plasma transferred arc, aMracBve are highlighted. The tailoring of Ni alloys by the synthesis of aluminides during the deposiBon of powder mixtures and enhanced carburizing and oxidaBon resistance of coaBngs is addressed. The challenges of processing and design properBes of intermetallic hardfacing coaBngs to make them a compeBBve opBon for applicaBons where superalloys can not perform are discussed. The development of coaBngs with graded properBes, due to either composiBonal or microstructural changes, as an approach to offer a strategic tool to achieve enhanced performance at high temperature is presented.
