Glycobiology is a primary field of interest for biomolecular and medical research and applications. It studies the structure, function and biology of glycans, one of the most abundant and functionally complex biomolecules in every cell and organism. Supported by carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry, glycobiology is expanding and becoming an essential extension of modern molecular biology and medicine.
This course will demonstrate how this field provides solutions and tools for demanding health problems by presenting basic concepts and the paths to translational glycobiology in academia, industry and/or patient advocacy.
Pre-and post-doctoral scientists, physicians, business employees, and educators that wish to build and complement their knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, with emphasis on Glycobiology applications. It also invites patient advocates interested in furthering their understanding of Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation and Human/people/centred Research and Drug Development, and also the other topics here included. Its e-learning format will reach and join a broader international community that will enrichen the course discussion.

The course is constituted of 8 curricular units:
1: Fundamentals of carbohydrates. General overview of the principal classes of human carbohydrates, the basic concepts of glycan biosynthesis and glycan-binding proteins.
2: Glycans in human physiological mechanisms. Mechanisms involving glycans that coordinate the function of different organ systems and glycan-protein interactions.
3: Glycans in Cancer. Roles and complexity of glycan altered biosynthesis in cancer, diagnostic and/or therapeutic significance.
4: Methods in Glycosciences. Modern methodologies to identify, synthesise and understand the biological function of glycans.
5: Applications of Glycosciences. Overview and practical examples of business models used by recent pharmaceuticals and suppliers for glycobiotechnology.
6. Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation. Mechanisms, current methods for diagnosis and treatment and the role of families and patients' associations in raising awareness.
7. Human/people/centred Research and Drug Development. Major aspects of the drug discovery, product registration and approval process with emphasis on the participation of patients advocates.
8. Project in Glycosciences. Research/ academic or entrepreneur project in the field of Glycosciences.
The course consists of eight sequential, complementary units during one semester, after working hours and asynchronous. Each unit includes online lectures, reading, exercises, online assignments, and discussion forums to improve the learning of the various topics. The estimated time requirements are 224 hours in total and 28 hours per unit. In addition, it includes tutorials of the e-Learning platform and user support by the e-Learning laboratory of the FCT NOVA to maximise their interactivity and learning outcomes.
The diploma will be attributed to students that have completed all eight curricular units. Yet, the course allows participants to enrol and complete only specific curricular units, according to their interests, where they will obtain specific certificates.
800 euros for the entire course or 150 euros per curricular unit for academics, patients and advocates. 1600 euros for the entire course or 300 euros per curricular unit for business sector.

The Department of Life Sciences (Departamento de Ciências da Vida - DCV) focuses its activity on teaching and research in fundamental Biology relevant for application in Biotechnology and Biomedicine.
DCV is responsibel for BSc's Courses - Licenciatura em Biologia Celular e Molecular (1st Cycle), MSc's - Mestrado em Genética molecular e Biomedicina (2nd Cycle) and PhD Program in Biology and PhD Program in Biotechnology (Co-coordination with DQ/FCT/UNL), while collaborating in several other courses with NOVA.
DCV is organised in a single Scientific Section, grouping the scientific ares of Microbiology, Genetics and Cell Biology. Research at DCV is integrated into International and National collaborative efforts in the areas of Microbiology, Human and Molecular Genetics, Biotechnology, Nanobiotechnology and Cell Biology.
More infoThe Applied Social Sciences Department (DCSA) guarantees, at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, the teaching and the research in areas outside the basic sciences and engineering, giving thus our students a structured training in the field of applied social sciences, what passes by having competency in the fields of expression and communication, the relationship between science / technology / society (history, philosophy and contemporary thought) ethics, work organization and economy, management and entrepreneurship.
More infoThe Department of Chemistry is a permanent organic unity of the NOVA School of Science and Technology, devoted to teaching, to scientific research and to provide services in areas of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering. The Chemistry Department (DQ, founded in 1981, has recognized market implementation in education and employment, particularly so because of the novelty and specificity introduced by the course in Applied Chemistry with which teaching at the School of Chemistry began.
