Master in Education

This programme started in the academic year 2014/2015. The number of credits for the degree is the minimum 90 ECTS (3 semesters).

Candidates holding a pre-Bologna degree or a 2.nd cycle degree of a course that qualifies them to the exercise the profession of educator or teacher at the various levels of schooling, may request credit for the curricular units of the respective courses.

Objectives

To promote an academic training that enables personal and professional development of teachers and other professionals in education, following a life long learning approach by providing the enhancement of professional practices and the improvement of the organizations in which they work;

To respond to the training needs and motivations in the various specialization areas, reflecting on the theoretical knowledge concerning teaching and learning, complementing the scientific knowledge taught, discussing teaching practices and forms of school and educational organization and further promoting the education of reflective professionals;

To deepen skills in areas such as learning, interdisciplinary, curricular development, research methodologies, technologies, sciences, education and interconnection with non-institutional learning;

To view school and education in a global and multidisciplinary way integrating various stakeholders and levels of education.

  • Specialization in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology;

  • Specialization in Physics Complements for Education. 

Tuition Fees

Portuguese students: 1250 € (1st year); 900 (2nd year)

Foreign students: 3500 €/semester

Schedule

It is expected that the lessons common to all master's students derive Fridays afternoon (15h-21h). The classes of the areas of expertise should proceed on Thursdays after work hours or other time set jointly by teachers and postgraduate students enrolled in a given area of expertise. Punctually, will take place teaching activities also on Saturday mornings.

Acceptance rate in masters

Accepted applicants will have to pay (within a maximum of 7 consecutive days from the date of placement) a non-refundable rate of 100 euros, which will be deducted, after registration, from the total tuition fee. Any payment made after the deadline will not be refunded, leaving the candidate excluded.

Admission rules:

  1. Candidates must hold a course that enables them to exercise the teaching profession. Prior professional experience in carrying out teaching activities is valued in the evaluation process of applications and ranking of candidates;
  2. May also joining this Master Degree, holders of other degrees, since currently engaged (or formerly earlier) with professional activities in education, such as technical of education, entertainers and socio-cultural mediators.

About the Department of Applied Social Sciences

The Applied Social Sciences Department (DCSA) guarantees, at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, the teaching and the research in areas outside the basic sciences and engineering, giving thus our students a structured training in the field of applied social sciences, what passes by having competency in the fields of expression and communication, the relationship between science / technology / society (history, philosophy and contemporary thought) ethics, work organization and economy, management and entrepreneurship.
