11-02-2025

Jelena Vladić, researcher at NOVA FCT, has been selected as one of the 12 scientists to join the Mediterranean Science Team 2025, an initiative by the Mediterranean Researchers’ Night (MEDNIGHT) that recognizes outstanding researchers. This project aims to address some of the most pressing challenges in the 23 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in neighboring regions.

An expert in ecological extraction processes and the use of microalgae for sustainability, Jelena Vladić has been recognized in the field of sustainable chemistry and green solvents, with a particular focus on innovative solutions for waste reduction and the use of renewable resources. As she explains, "Microalgae are the key to transforming waste into sustainable resources for food and the environment. Our work can help address some of the world’s greatest challenges, from food security to environmental sustainability."

This recognition is even more significant as the Mediterranean Science Team 2025 highlights the growing presence of women in science: 11 out of the 12 selected scientists are women, emphasizing the vital role women play in shaping the future of research.

The MEDNIGHT initiative is a platform that promotes science in the Mediterranean and encourages scientific cooperation among countries in the region. The official team presentation and awards ceremony will take place in Brussels on March 14, 2025, at the Mediterranean Science Team Presentation Gala & MU-GEP Award Ceremony.

Jelena Vladić's inclusion in this prestigious group reflects NOVA FCT's commitment to excellence in research and sustainability, further solidifying its position as a leading center for applied science aimed at social and environmental well-being.
