Job Title:  EIT Raw Materials Master of Science Degree Grant

Contract:  Master of Science Research Grant until 31st December, 2018 
Salary:  Month rate: gross monthly rate of € 980,00 (nine hundred and eighty euros).
Location: Campus of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, at Universidade Nova de Lisboa 
Start Date: 1 October 2018

About FCT NOVA and EIT-KIC Raw Materials

The Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT NOVA), located at Campus of Caparica is one of the most prestigious Portuguese engineering and science public schools. It is engaged in extensive research activity developed in 16 research centers involving 1600 PhD and Master’s students of the total enrolment of 7800. FCT NOVA partners with foreign universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Carnegie Mellon and the University of Texas at Austin to offer some of its advanced study programs. The entrepreneurial drive of the students and graduates of FCT NOVA has led to many successful spin-offs that transfer knowledge to the market and help create value and social impact.

FCT NOVA is the unique full member of the EIT KIC Raw Materials in Portugal it belongs to the Co-location Centre (Metz) since May 2016, reuniting 4 different departments constituting, in the all, the complete value chain of the Circular Economy: Dep. of Earth Sciences, Dep. of Science Materials, Dep. Chemistry and Dep. of Sciences and Environmental Engineer. It is integrated in the Project “Classification and Sorting of Radium-rich Phosphogypsum Tailings (raPHOSafe)” (Proj. Nº 17027) that this grant is opened.

FCT NOVA main tasks: identification of the environmental and ethical issues, risks and benefits of PG tailings classification and separation of PG material to its respective use in industry and society. It is intended that the fellow research act as a key player in the investigations and the production of the deliverables (guidelines and Short Technical Reports to be presented) of the three main FCT NOVA tasks.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Likely to be qualified to degree level. MSc in Geological Engineering with previous graduation on Geology, Mining Engineering or Geological Engineering. 

Experience and formation

  • Evidence of curricular formation (Master of Science or previous graduation) in environmental geology, environmental engineering geology or equivalent.
  • Evidence of knowledge derived from work experience or academic research on mining exploration and/or exploitation activities and (preferably) on its consequent geoenvironmental impacts.
  • Evidence of knowledge derived from work experience or academic research related with potential geochemical and/or radiological impacts on soils, sediments, water and/or groundwater derived from NORM minerals or raw materials.

Skills

  • Fluency in English and native Portuguese.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and commitment with deadlines.
  • Confidence to work in scientific and technologic field.

Qualities

  • Confidence to work in scientific and technologic field.
  • Well organised and self-motivated.

Jury composition

The jury is composed by three effective members and two substitute members. The three effective members are: 1) Sofia Verónica Barbosa, Assistant Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences (FCT/NOVA) as President; 2) José Carlos Kullberg, Associate Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences (FCT/NOVA), as first vowel; 3) José António Almeida, Associate Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences (FCT/NOVA) as second vowel. The substitute members are: 1) Ana Paula Silva, Assistant Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences (FCT/NOVA) as first substitute vowel; 2) Fátima Maria Lopes da Silva, Master Degree, “Técnica Superior – 1.ª Classe” (FCT/NOVA) as second substitute vowel. A substitute member can only substitute effective vowels.

Selection

The candidates will be pre-selected based on their CV and other documents submitted, as their fitness to all the requirements for admission previously listed. The selected candidates will have an interview (obligatory) conducted in English. A final decision will be made only after all interviews take place. The jury composed of three persons will meet remotely at its most convenience. Final results will be publicized as a ranking list to all candidates by email.
