The NOVA University of Lisbon has achieved 4th place (shared) among the leading Portuguese applicants for European patents, according to the latest EPO Patent Index 2024, published on March 25, 2025, by the European Patent Office (EPO). This achievement reflects the strength of the research and innovation promoted by the institution, consolidating its prominent position in both the national and international landscape of intellectual property and technology transfer.
NOVA FCT, which accounts for 80% of NOVA's patents, has been fundamental in consolidating this strategy of excellence and knowledge enhancement. Its contribution to the creation and protection of innovations in the fields of Science, Engineering, and Technology has been decisive in increasing Portugal's competitiveness within the European context.
Among the inventions patented by NOVA FCT and highlighted in this study are innovations such as a method for producing biodegradable polymers (PHA) from CO2 as an alternative to conventional plastics, an antibacterial cellulose-based hydrogel for the treatment of bacterial infections, and advanced wireless communication systems.
The recognition by the EPO serves as a strong incentive to continue investing in research projects, licensing processes, and partnerships with the industrial sector. Collaboration between academia, industry, and government organisations is essential to create synergies that drive sustainable development and Portugal's international competitiveness.
This data also underscores the important role of academic institutions in stimulating innovative activity in the country, with NOVA contributing to the 38.2% growth in patent applications by Portuguese entities to the EPO since 2020.
