The 3D Printing Centre for Health, led by Cláudia Quaresma, professor and researcher at NOVA FCT's Physics Department, was the winner of the NOVA Research Impact Narratives & Award, in the ‘Social Responsibility’ category.
Created by researchers, professors and engineers from the LIBPhys and UNIDEMI research centres, in collaboration with FCT FabLab (Powered by US Embassy), this non-profit centre's main objective is to develop devices using 3D printing applied to healthcare. The devices developed include prostheses, orthotics and personalised support devices, which significantly improve mobility and quality of life. These personalised devices offer better adaptation and functionality for people with motor handicaps, directly contributing to better results in the rehabilitation process.
One of the centre's major contributions is to combine three crucial pillars: innovation, research and social responsibility. Reflecting this mission, Cláudia Quaresma states: ‘By putting people first, the 3D Printing Centre for Health drives innovation in the design of personalised devices, promoting accessibility and inclusion.’
Since its creation, the project has supported more than 78 patients and nine services from different hospitals, promoting a better quality of life for children, adults and the elderly.
The award was presented during the NOVA Science & Innovation Day, which took place on 3 December at the Rectory of NOVA University Lisbon.
