The NOVA FCT community, partners and friends gathered on 13 November at the Caparica Campus Grand Auditorium to celebrate the school's 47th anniversary. A history marked by its impact on society, its commitment to excellence in education and the promotion of innovation and knowledge.
The ceremony began with a celebration of the School's raison d'être: its students. Awards and honours were presented to students who were outstanding for their academic merit in the 2022/23 academic year. 'The School is built on its students. May your success continue to reflect the good name of the School,‘ emphasised Margarida Marques, President of the NOVA FCT Students’ Association, in her speech.
The event also paid tribute to the community's commitment and dedication to building a school of reference, recognising employees with 30 years of service and celebrating agreements with retired teachers.
‘NOVA FCT's leadership in research and innovation, both within and beyond NOVA and the country, has contributed to making the University a national and international reference in key areas,’ said João Sàágua, Rector of NOVA University Lisbon.
'Thinking can change the world. Thinking is the deepest expression of our freedom,' said Carla Quintão, NOVA FCT's Vice-Dean for the Scientific Council, underlining the importance of teaching and knowledge in safeguarding a democratic society.
‘We have inspired generations of scientists and engineers. We have built innovation and knowledge, giving back to society the investment it has made in us,’ said José Júlio Alferes, Dean of NOVA FCT. ‘You are all part of a community of talent, creativity and knowledge,’ he added.
Eurico Duarte, the student with the highest entry grade for a NOVA FCT degree, shared the reasons that led him to choose the Caparica Campus to continue his studies: ‘’Opting for a college is not an easy choice; it has repercussions for the future. Having a curriculum that satisfies the academic part and the so-called soft skills, which will allow me to know what role I will have and what computer engineer I will be, were serious considerations. I don't know what my future will be like yet, but I do know what School I'll be at," he explained.
The ceremony also featured musical performances by the Alice Travessa Quartet, the Hot Club, the Linus Trio, singer Charlie Elle, TunaMaria and anTUNiA. Present at the session were representatives from the Rectorate, the NOVA FCT Board, Department Chairs, Research Centre Coordinators, representatives from partner companies, as well as representatives from Almada Town Hall and the Portuguese Navy.
