15-11-2024

The pedagogical project "Can the Flipped-Classroom Methodology Make the Bioenergy Teaching & Learning Processes More Engaging?", developed by Nuno Lapa, professor and researcher at NOVA FCT's Chemistry Department, alongside researchers Inês Matos and Márcia Ventura, was awarded the 3rd edition of NOVA's Pedagogical Innovation Award.

“This recognition from NOVA's Rectorate reinforces our commitment to innovating teaching and learning methodologies,” stated Nuno Lapa. “NOVA FCT has a strong tradition of scientific and technological innovation, exemplified by its adoption of an innovative pedagogical profile. The next step is to further integrate innovation into curricular teaching and learning processes, which can create opportunities for new courses and attract students seeking to develop skills beyond academic qualifications.”

The project applied the "flipped classroom" approach, encouraging students to prepare for lessons through alternative methods, enhancing their engagement with programme content. Over 13 weeks, this methodology was implemented in the Bioenergy curricular unit of the Master’s in Renewable Energy Engineering, with positive results reflected in both knowledge assessments and student feedback.

Combining face-to-face and online formats, the project relied on Moodle@FCT as its central platform, enabling students to deepen their involvement with the material, improve time management, and increase classroom interaction.

For Inês Matos, the award underscores the value of investing time and creativity in teaching to achieve meaningful outcomes. Márcia Ventura echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that innovative teaching strategies fostering autonomy, integration, and interactivity can enhance students' engagement and accountability, contributing to a more dynamic and competitive education system.

The award was presented during NOVA University Lisbon’s anniversary celebration on November 12 at the Campolide Campus.
