Memorandum between NOVA FCT and NOS strengthens co-operation with the corporate sector

05-09-2024

On 3 September, NOVA FCT strengthened its links with industry by signing a cooperation protocol with NOS, one of Portugal's most prestigious telecommunications companies.

This partnership, which will last for three years, aims to promote and boost the development of Science, Engineering and Technology in Portugal by supporting teaching and research.

The agreement between the two entities creates a new scholarship and strengthens co-operation in research and innovation activities, with the aim of boosting the transfer of technology and knowledge.

This collaboration will boost opportunities for NOVA FCT students, who will have access to curricular internships, the development of master's dissertations and doctoral theses, as well as collaboration for the development of professorships.

Luís Nascimento, Director of NOS, emphasises: ‘We believe that the link between companies and academia is extremely important for the transfer of knowledge between institutions and the creation of value for society. With this partnership, we want to contribute to the enrichment of our economy and, at the same time, identify and promote young talents who want to be part of this ecosystem.’

Ana Rodrigo Gonçalves, Head of Partnerships & Engagement at NOVA FCT, argues that ‘it is essential to expand the spaces for dialogue between universities and companies so that we can anticipate the needs of university training in the face of the challenges of an increasingly technological market. These partnerships are crucial for bringing higher education institutions closer to the business world, promoting a paradigm shift: universities should not only be seen as places for transmitting knowledge, but also as creative centres that facilitate direct contact with the main national companies, such as NOS. Feedback from students reveals that the transition to the labour market is one of their biggest concerns, and we believe that this preparation should be increasingly driven by close collaboration between universities and companies.’

It is anticipated that this partnership will promote greater qualifications for young people in areas that are vital to society, increased opportunities for training and entering the labour market, as well as a greater exchange of knowledge that will stimulate the development of new responses to concrete challenges facing society.
