Jorge Miguel Marcelino Ruivo, a student on NOVA FCT's Doctoral Programme in Industrial Engineering, won the Best Presentation Award at the 14th International Conference & Global Competition on Systematic Innovation (ICSI & GCSI).
The student presented the article "Smart Naval Maintenance, Bridging the Gap," which proposes initiating research for the development of a systematic methodology to achieve intelligent maintenance for warships.
The article connects several elements: maintenance, Industry 4.0, Lean, and TRIZ. Lean tools can help mitigate the effects of smaller crews on maintenance outcomes, while TRIZ, the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, offers techniques and tools for problem-solving, contributing to the creation of an intelligent maintenance methodology.
"ICSI is a benchmark for innovative methodologies in various fields of science, so the opportunity to present the work already done is an important validation milestone and a huge stimulus to continue researching and developing the thesis. It is also a unique moment of satisfaction to represent the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, NOVA FCT and the Navy to other institutions and audiences with recognised merit," said Jorge Miguel Marcelino Ruivo.
The winning entry is the result of work carried out for his PhD thesis, under the supervision of Helena Navas, a professor at NOVA FCT's DEMI, and the co-supervision of Suzana Lampreia, a professor at the Portuguese Naval and Navy School.
The conference took place between 13 and 15 October 2023 in Guangdong, China.
