On July 11, the community gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at NOVA FCT.

"Although it is one of the youngest departments in the School, it has one of the oldest educational backgrounds," said José Júlio Alferes, Dean of NOVA FCT, in his address. "The history of this department is one of success, consolidation, growth, and innovation. It is one of the central departments in this faculty and for society, focused on the future. Proof of this is the continued investment in creating relevant programs for societal development, exemplified by the Master's degrees in Maritime Logistics and Advanced Digital Manufacturing Engineering," he added.

Established in 1999, it has since occupied Building VIII on the Caparica Campus. Over three thousand students have graduated from its bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. Research has been at the core of DEMI's work, evidenced by UNIDEMI, the department's research center, receiving the highest evaluation from the Foundation for Science and Technology in 2019 and maintaining this qualification to date.

The gathering aimed to recognize "the legacy of DEMI, which, despite being a young department, has a significant impact on society through the students we train, the research and technological development we produce, and our partnerships with the business sector," explained Telmo Santos, current President of DEMI.

The event included a roundtable with current and former presidents of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. This discussion provided the community with the opportunity to learn about each participant's experiences and contributions to building a cohesive and ambitious department, as well as to share wishes and recommendations for the coming years.

The meeting, held in the Auditorium of the NOVA FCT Library, was attended by the Dean's Board members, Department Presidents, colleagues, and friends.
