Diogo Miguel Geraldes Torres wins Gulbenkian New Talents Scholarship in Chemistry

Diogo Miguel Geraldes Torres, student of the degree in Applied Chemistry is the only student of  NOVA School of Science and Technology distinguished with the Gulbenkian New Talents Scholarship.

At the end of the first year of this programme, the student got an average of 18.8 points which granted him this scholarship in the area of Chemistry. "I have always been very curious about discovering things and chemistry was the subject that gave me the most opportunities to get to know new things," he explains. "I came to FCT NOVA because, besides being prestigious and with a good environment, it guarantees more contact with the laboratory part and resources that will be fundamental in my path", he added.

This programme of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation intends to detect and support the talent of exceptional students and stimulate their initiation into research. The value of the annual grant to be awarded will be a minimum of €2,500, including support for further studies, namely for the payment of tuition fees and to encourage research (to the value of €1,000), and support for talent-enhancing activities such as advanced training courses, participation in conferences and summer schools, internships, language courses, the purchase of books and laboratory equipment, among others (to the value of €1,500).

Diogo Torres still does not know the specific content of his research but it will certainly be in the area of Inorganic Chemistry. "It is the area that interests me the most and that I intend to deepen with this scholarship", explains the student.

The New Talents will have the opportunity to participate in an immersive talent enrichment programme, with tutors of recognised merit, and dedicated mentoring for each area of the programme assisted by a scientific committee. The programme additionally includes group personal development sessions, therefore promoting an environment of sharing and networking among the fellows that may continue even after the fellowship period.
