NOVA School of Science and Technology research group sets world record for solar laser efficiency.

28-01-2021

The "Ce: Nd: YAG solar laser project, pumped by the solar energy collection and concentration system", developed in the Department of Physics of the NOVA School of Science and Technology, broke the world record for solar laser efficiency.

The achievement was highlighted in the Journal of Photonics for Energy, with the article "Ce: Nd: YAG side-pumped solar laser", by Cláudia R. Vistas, Dawei Liang, Joana Almeida, Bruno D. Tibúrcio, Dário Garcia, Miguel Catela, Hugo Costa, Emmanuel Guillot.

The article describes the experimental work of the Laser Technology Group of CEFITEC in partnership with PROMES-CNRS, from France, where the performance of the solar laser was examined with the use of active laser medium with a broader absorption spectrum in the visible region (Ce: Nd: YAG), providing an increase in laser power with more than 40% of collection efficiency, compared to the previous record, in lateral pumping configuration.
