Smart4health: A platform for digitizing healthcare in Europe

Ricardo Jardim Gonçalves, professor at the Department of Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering and researcher in the CTS/GRIS at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, is one of the co-authors of the article “Digitalizing the healthcare ecosystem in the European Union”, published in the prestigious Health Quarterly (number 13), which focuses on the importance of an European strategy for the digitization of health.

The growing interest across the European Union to digitize the health ecosystem has created space for several independent platforms that aim to respond to this challenge (EU Electronic Health Records-EHR). However, the diversity of research has not however devised a system that can be cross-border.

The H2020 Smart4health project, coordinated by UNINOVA – Institute for the Development of New Technologies, is one of the first projects that aims to respond to the diverse needs for a secure digital Europe, ensuring the secure access of citizens to health, supporting the data infrastructure for research, and facilitating the interaction between patients and health professionals.
