FCT NOVA PORDATA wins Innovation Award 2016 contest

Professor Graça Martinho, Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, and researcher Dr. Ana Lucia Pires, both of MARE - Marine Sciences Centre and the Environment - won the PORDATA Innovation 2016 award in the category "unpublished indicators".

The indicator, called "The Urban Waste Management Hierarchy Index" reflects the application level of the management hierarchy of urban waste, allowing evaluating how the Waste Management Systems are contributing to the circular economy.

The index ranges from -100% (management options that do not include recycling or organic recovery) and + 100% (management options where all waste is sent for recycling and / or organic recovery).

The objective of PORDATA Innovation award is to obtain proposals for innovative statistical indicators based on published data in PORDATA, representing an asset for the understanding and knowledge of the society dynamics.
