Visiting Scientist Grant in the framework of MERIS project

08-02-2013

This call for a Visiting Scientist ("Bolsa de Cientista Convidado", BCC) is addressed to a PhD holder with at least 4 years of experience in developing high-performance computing (HPC) and image processing applications to support research programs for the validation of ocean color data products from the MERIS sensor of the European Space Agency (ESA), as well as from the MODIS and SeaWiFS sensors of the  National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The position is granted by project MERIS, a contract between the Centre for Artificial Intelligence (CENTRIA) of the Department of Informatics (DI) and ESA.  The work will be executed in close collaboration with the Centre for Informatics and Information Technology (CITI), as both centres of the DI have jointly been hosting research activities for the analysis of MERIS marine products during the last years in the framework of ongoing validation activities of interest to the ESA. The successful candidate will contribute to this team work by: 1) conducting Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations in 3D for improved protocol definition of field above-water radiometry; 2) developing HPC solutions for optimizing Monte Carlo computations in large-scale parallel computing environments; 3) developing and applying ocean color inversion schemes based on neural networks to derive high-level products on a regional scale; 4) validating standard MERIS products by means of match-up data analysis and comparison with regional product maps; and 5) producing summury reports and peer-review publications.

Candidates must hence have working knowledge in ocean color radiative transfer, satellite image processing, and artificial neural network applications, as well as a consolidated experience in HPC and parallel processing. Very good writing and communication skills in English are required. Expertise in statistics, physics and MATLAB programming will also be highly considered.

The foreseen starting date of the Visiting Scientist position is the 1st of April 2013. The duration of the BCC Grant is one year. The BCC Grant compensation is 2650€ per month plus social security. Interested candidates must send a cover letter summarizing research methods planned to address the job tasks above and a curriculum vitae, by e-mail (subject: “Visiting Scientist MERIS”) to Prof. Pedro Barahona (pb@fct.unl.pt) until the 8th of March. Selected candidates may be called for job interview during March.
