On January 14th, José Júlio Alferes, Dean of NOVA FCT, formalized the School's integration into the Aviation Sustainability Alliance.
Established under the National Roadmap for the Decarbonization of Aviation (RONDA), this alliance aims to foster a systemic and well-founded discussion to outline economically viable and scientifically grounded measures and actions. Its mission is to create actionable mechanisms to guide economic stakeholders toward achieving the essential goal of decarbonizing air transport.
Aviation is a strategic pillar for the country but faces significant challenges that require a coordinated response from all parties involved. Among its priorities is the decarbonization of air transport, which currently accounts for approximately 10% of transport sector emissions and about 2% of global emissions. The alliance seeks to establish the conditions for collective and coordinated action, ensuring that air traffic growth aligns with global climate action objectives.
By joining this alliance, NOVA FCT reinforces its commitment to sustainability, recognizing its role as a leading institution in education and research.
The launch event for the alliance took place at the Air Museum in Sintra and was attended by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho; the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz; the Chief of the Air Force Staff; the President of the National Innovation Agency, António Grilo; the President of TAP, Luís Rodrigues; and the President of ANA, General Manuel Teixeira Rolo.
