The NOVA FCT will host the 9th Edition of the Doctoral Programme in Environment and Sustainability (PDAS) Seminar from 3rd to 5th July, one of the oldest and most internationally recognised in the country.
This event will bring together around 50 students, including a significant number of international students, approximately 25 lecturers and researchers, and various external guests, at the Caparica Campus. The seminar aims to foster synergies and broaden the debate on sustainability research, drawing from various points of reflection based on academic and professional experiences.
Over the three days, participants will have the opportunity to discuss ongoing doctoral research projects among peers. The event is organised by Professors Tomás Ramos (Doctoral Programme Coordinator), Graça Martinho, and Marta Martins (members of the PDAS scientific committee).
Among the invited speakers for this edition are Professors Bernhardus Van Hoof from the University of los Andes, Colombia; Marco Painho from the NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS) and coordinator of the Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies (Erasmus Mundus) and the Master in Geographic Information Science and Systems; and Maria Rosa Paiva, an expert in Ecology, with a long career as a lecturer and researcher at NOVA FCT.
The doctoral students will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, and academic and professional experiences with Rita Lopes and André Nouri, lecturers at NOVA FCT, and Paula Guedes, a researcher at CENSE. To address the connection between researchers and companies, Vanda Santos, Human Resources Director at Biosurfit SA, and Nélia Câmara, Director of NOVA Executive Education at NOVA FCT, will share their experiences and insights on leadership, team management, and hiring PhD researchers, among other topics.
“The seminar model is inspired by leading international universities in the field of sustainability, featuring parallel sessions with ten-minute presentations and discussions between students and lecturers/researchers. The aim is to provide an update on ongoing research projects. Students are also challenged to present their projects to all participants using creative strategies, such as installations, musical compositions, paintings, drawings, poems, performances, or any other innovative ideas,” says Tomás Ramos, PDAS coordinator.
The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at NOVA FCT, responsible for PDAS, was founded in 1977 and was a pioneer in teaching Environmental Engineering in Portugal, maintaining strong links with civil society. Its two research centres, CENSE and MARE, are pillars of education and knowledge, promoting interdisciplinary research in environment and sustainability through integrative and holistic approaches to tackle societal challenges, in collaboration with national and international research centres
