Minister of Science, Technology, and Higher Education Inaugurates Laboratory at NOVA FCT

The new laboratory at CENIMAT, dedicated to the memory of the former Dean of NOVA FCT, Professor Fernando Santana, was inaugurated on 15th March in the presence of the Minister of Science, Technology, and Higher Education.

"I am honored and proud that this facility of national and international excellence, CENIMAT, will perpetuate the legacy of Professor Fernando Santana," said Elvira Fortunato, Professor in the Department of Materials Science and a researcher at this esteemed research center. Currently, she is overseeing the affairs of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education.

Opening the session, Rodrigo Martins, coordinator of the research center, reflected on the vision and sense of purpose that Professor Fernando Santana instilled in NOVA FCT, further solidifying its status as a leading institution in the realm of Science, Technology and Engineering.

"It was under the guidance of Professor Fernando Santana that the School made significant strides, fueled by the dedication to scientific advancement that he championed. The School owes much of its present stature to Professor Fernando Santana," stated José Júlio Alferes, Dean of NOVA FCT.

Although the Rector of NOVA was unable to attend in person, he conveyed his sentiments, stating, "I would like to add my voice to this significant tribute, which I find fitting, timely, and deserving. Professor Fernando Santana, besides being an exemplary academic, holds an indelible place within NOVA."

The new laboratory will stand as a cornerstone for advancing CENIMAT's pioneering research endeavors. The research center, renowned both nationally and internationally, boasts 11 European Research Council grants, one of the most important grants in the fields of Science, Engineering, and Technology.

The ceremony was attended by Professor Fernando Santana's family, members of the Deans Office, Presidents of Department, colleagues, and friends. To round off the day, Tuna Maria and anTUNia were also present, providing a musical moment for the attendees.
