The winners of the 24th edition of the "Trusted Brands" survey, which assesses the level of trust Portuguese people have in a range of everyday realities – brands, personalities, professions and institutions – have just been announced. Once again, Elvira Fortunato's name appears on this list.
Alongside figures such as Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (politics), Eduardo Barroso (medicine) and Ruy de Carvalho (theatre), who were also honoured in the "Personalities" category, the current Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education stands out once again in the field of science and research –repeating the feat achieved in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Former Vice Rector of NOVA University Lisbon, between 2017 and 2022, Elvira Fortunato is a professor at the Department of Materials Science at NOVA FCT and researcher at CENIMAT, and is known worldwide as a pioneer researcher in paper electronics.
As a scientist, she has twice received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) worth €3.5 million, the largest grant ever awarded to a single person in science in Portugal.
One of the 25 most influential women in Portugal in 2020, Elvira Fortunato was also awarded the Pessoa Prize in the same year – an initiative that aims to recognise each year the Portuguese personality who has made the greatest impact through her work.
In 2015, she was chosen to preside over the celebrations of the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.
Among many other distinctions, Elvira Fortunato has also been one of the faces of #EUwomen4future, a European campaign to promote gender equality as the basis for a prosperous and fair society, among many other awards.
