NOVA will award the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to the Brazilian musician and composer Gilberto Gil on 31 October. The award comes on the occasion of the university's 50th anniversary and recognises Gilberto Gil's extraordinary contribution to international culture and the legacy he has left behind over several decades.

"It is an honour and a privilege for NOVA to recognise Gilberto Gil, a symbol of Portuguese-speaking culture and inspiration for several generations. Like Gilberto Gil, NOVA believes in the transformative power of education and the importance of culture as a fundamental pillar of society. This honour also represents our commitment to excellence and diversity, values that he so vividly embodies," explains João Sàágua, Rector of the NOVA University Lisbon.

This tribute will serve as the inaugural event for the "Ciclo Brasil na NOVA" (Brazil in NOVA) initiative. The series of concerts and activities will not only celebrate the artist's work but also offer a platform for critical reflection within the university setting. The cycle is set to kick off with its first concert on October 22nd.
