Partnership between NOVA FCT and the Pedagogical University of Maputo boosts postgraduate program in Mathematics

02-08-2023

As part of the "Support for Postgraduate Courses in Mathematics in the PALOP" program established by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, NOVA FCT and the Pedagogical University of Maputo (UPM) are launching the 1st edition of the "Postgraduate Course in Mathematical Methods and Models Applied to Business." The training is scheduled to start  in January 2024. This is the second time the Department of Mathematics at NOVA FCT has successfully appliedn to this program,  having conducted a postgraduate programme in Cape Verde during 2021.

This support is a component of the development of postgraduate programmes or reissues of courses already supported by the Foundation, focusing on related domains of Mathematics. These initiatives, while not conferring degrees, are established within higher education institutions in the PALOP region. These institutions may be public or private, nonprofit entities with at least a decade of teaching experience and a dedicated teaching department in Mathematics or related fields. The Gulbenkian incentive programme further stipulates that the proposing institution – in this case, UPM – should extend scholarships and/or reductions in tuition fees to students.

This postgraduate program (PG) is coordinated by Paula Amaral, professor from the Department of Mathematics at NOVA FCT, and Vasco Cuambe, Professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the Pedagogical University of Maputo. The PG is designed to provide candidates (graduates or those holding other academic degrees) with specialization in related areas of Mathematics, encompassing subjects such as: Data Science, Biostatistics, Modeling and Optimization, Decision Theory, Machine Learning, Actuarial and Financial Mathematics, among others.

Teaching responsibilities are exclusively carried out by NOVA FCT faculty members, with a minimum duration of 180 hours (equivalent to one academic semester), contributing to offering a solid technical and scientific education grounding, both  in-person and remotely.
