Fabio Chalub is one of the Portuguese Ambassadors for International Day of Mathematics

13-12-2022

Fabio Chalub, professor and researcher of the Department of Mathematics (DM) of NOVA School of Science and Technology, is one of the Portuguese Ambassadors for International Day of Mathematics .

The International Day of Mathematics (IDM) is a worldwide celebration that takes place every year on March 14th. On this day, all countries are invited to celebrate mathematics with activities for both students and the general public, in schools, museums, libraries and other spaces.

IDM ambassadors, appointed by the International Mathematical Union, fulfil a key role in spreading the celebration in their countries, acting as liaison with school networks, local mathematics organisations and the press. In addition, they are often involved in the organisation of events in their countries.

"It is a pride to have a lecturer and researcher who has been chosen as one of the Ambassadors of the International Mathematics Day, once again it demonstrates the internationally recognised quality of the members of the DM", says Ana Cristina Casimiro, President of the DM of FCT NOVA.

Fabio Chalub was one of the members of the first Management Committee of the International Mathematics Day. Since 2018 he is a member of the Committe on Applications and Interdisciplinary Relations of the European Mathematical Society. At FCT NOVA he has already been coordinator of the Centre for Mathematics and Applications and President of the DM.

March 14 was chosen as the date for the IDM because it was already celebrated in many countries as Pi Day, based on the fact that some countries write it as 3/14 and the mathematical constant Pi is approximately 3.14.

The IDM project is led by the International Mathematical Union with the support of numerous international and regional organisations from around the world. It was proclaimed by UNESCO at the 40th session of the General Conference, 26 November 2019. The first celebration took place on 14 March 2020.
