João Araújo elected President of the Portuguese Mathematical Society

João Araújo, professor in the Department of Mathmatics at NOVA School of Science and Technology, was elected, on July 14th, President of the Portuguese Mathematical Society for the 2020/2022 biennium.

The new president intends to “give mathematics more visibility by demonstrating how it can contribute to improving people's lives." In addition, João Araújo also plans "to publicize the faces of Portuguese mathematics by creating prizes for teachers, researchers and students, which stimulate teaching and excellence of mathematics in Portugal”.

Frequent commentator on the Observador, the mathematician has more than 60 scientific articles and received the KM Stott Memorial Prize that distinguishes the best thesis of the year.

The Portuguese Mathematical Society (SPM) is an association dedicated to the dissemination, development of teaching and mathematical research in Portugal.
