The Opening Ceremony of EUSO 2019 (European Union Science Olympiad) will take place on May 5th, 2019, at 10:00 am, at the Grand Auditorium of FCT NOVA.
The European Union Science Olympiad will be held for the first time in Portugal, with the tests taking place in FCT NOVA laboratories.
Portugal participates in this competition, which in 2017 involved the participation of 25 European countries, since 2008. In that year, Portugal participated as an observer, having fuuly participated since then and achieving good results. In 2017, one of the Portuguese teams won a silver medal. In the previous year, it was the gold medal. In 2012 both participating teams obtained silver medals and in 2013 was also a silver medal for one of the Portuguese teams.
The big difference for the other competitions is that the tests are multidisciplinary, integrated and practical and it is a competition for teams.
This test provides young EU students with a platform to showcase their scientific capabilities, as well as challenges and stimulates the talents of EU science students to advance their careers as scientists.
The tasks of EUSO (experiences) are intellectually challenging and require teamwork, problem-solving skills, knowledge building, and higher-order thinking. Evidence requires the interpretation of experimental data, facilitates the manipulation of information and ideas, encourages communication among team members, and often allows alternative solutions.
The Portuguese participation in EUSO is jointly managed by the Directorate-General for Education, FCT NOVA, Almada City Council, the Portuguese Society of Physics, the Portuguese Society of Chemistry and the Order of Biologists.
