José Carlos Ferreira, Professor of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at FCT NOVA, gave a series of interviews on the problems of erosion, climate change and coastal management.
The urgent measures taken to safeguard the Portuguese coast after periods of greater erosion are insufficient to prevent material and personal damages in the future, thus needing continuity in management and a great investment, warn experts.
"In the last 20 years whenever there is a storm there is urgent investment, but then there is no continuity in this type of solutions and investments. We need the policy to be continuous," he told Lusa news agency and added that in his opinion" the plan of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) for the coast is an appropriate plan, but it is necessary that the Government's action is taken seriously. "
According to the FCT NOVA Researcher there is a need for a continuous policy of "naturalization and restoration of the coastal zone ecosystems and also the withdrawal of risk areas." This is needed even if issues related to land-use planning are taken seriously.
