Researchers Octavio Mateus and Emanuel Tschopp, from FCT NOVA's Department of Earth Sciences, have discovered a new species of sauropod dinosaur. The scientific paper of which was published on May 2nd in the scientific journal Peerj. The new dinosaur specie is the Galeamopus pabsti.
This Jurassic dinosaur was excavated by a Swiss team, led by Hans-Jakob "Kirby" Siber and Ben Pabst, in Wyoming, United States, in 1995. It is the latest in a series of new discoveries by the paleontologists Emanuel Tschopp and Octávio Mateus , which began in 2012 with the new species Kaatedocus siberi. The new article was published online in the open-access journal PeerJ on Tuesday, May 2nd.
The Galeamopus pabsti is similar to the famous Diplodocus dinosaurs and Brontosaurus, but with more massive legs, and a particularly tall and triangular neck near the head. It is the second species of the genus Galeamopus, which was recognized as a new genus, different from the Diplodocus, by the same researchers in 2015. The new species is dedicated to Ben Pabst, who found the skeleton, and prepared it for assembly at the Sauriermuseum Aathal Switzerland, where it is one of the main attractions of the permanent exhibition.
