During the afternoon of June 6th, the prize giving session of the first edition of the Competition "FCT NEW Challenge" took place. This competition involved 58 projects of young students from Secondary Schools, studying the Scientific-Humanistic Course of Science and Technology Secondary Education, coordinated by their respective teachers.
The winners with the 3rd prize of € 2,500 was the project "Sapato Piezoeléctrico" of the Colégio da Imaculada Conceição from Cernache – Coimbra. The 2nd prize, worth € 5,000, was won by the project "Neuro Teste" from the Secondary School of Arouca. Finally, the 1st prize, worth € 5,000 and a trip to the United States of America, to the NASA Center and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, was won by the project "Vida no limite" of the Secondary School Daniel Sampaio from Almada.
The ceremony began with speeches by Professor Fernando Santana, Director of NOVA FCT, the Secretary of State for Education, Professor João Costa, by Professor Antonio Rendas, Rector of the University NOVA of Lisbon, and the US Ambassador, Dr. Robert Sherman. These interventions were followed by the presentation by the students of the twelve projects selected by the jury as finalists.
