In the framework of the discipline "Social Aspects of Information Technology Professionals" (ASPI), the 4th year of the MSc in Computer Science (MIEI) held last May 3the seminar "Citizenship and new technologies : paradigm shift or complete disorientation "by António Vitorino.
In the closing session of the ASPI course, António Vitorino, former minister and European Commissioner, launched a challenge to the students: "How to reconcile the fundamental principles of citizenship and ethics with the possibilities of the current information society? Are we in the presence of a complete paradigm shift or of complete disorientation? ".
In fact, in the last decade, the emergence and globalization of the Internet, software and content in the cloud, and mobile and ubiquitous computing have been blurring traditional boundaries and assumptions of relations between countries, citizens, businesses with clear ethical, legislative, social, economic and political impact.
Since the creation of the Master in Computer Engineering, the "Socio-Professional Aspects of Computing discipline offered to future engineers gives them the opportunity to interact with a panel of expert speakers on hot topics of the modern information society.
Other invited speakers of the academic year 2015/16 included the Journalist and Communicator Vasco Trigo (ISCTE), the Inspector Baltazar Rodrigues (Judicial Police), Eng. Paulo Trezentos (Magic Box, Aptoide and ISCTE), Prof. Isabel Nunes (FCT NOVA) Eng. Vítor Santos (Order of Engineers and NEW IMS), and Prof. José Legatheaux Martins (FCT NOVA), which covered topics such as the relationship between journalism and the Digital Revolution, computer crime, intellectual property and software, ergonomics and computer of occupational diseases, the profession of Informatics Engineer, and evolution of the Internet in Portugal. The discipline "Socio-Professional Aspects of Informatics" is coordinated by Profs. Vasco Amaral, Paulo Lopes, Armanda Rodrigues and Pedro Medeiros.
