The team of CENIMAT / i3N led by Rodrigo Martins developed low cost photovoltaic cells of amorphous silicon in food packaging, type tetrapak. Following the line of research in the area of paper, CENIMAT / i3N closes a cycle with a device that generates electrical energy from alternative sources, the sun, and whose physical support consists of food packaging, type tetrapak. The advantage of using this type of substrate has to do with the concerned application, i.e. the solar cell is no longer a component to be added, functioning as an extension of the package itself, thus making smart packaging a more next reality.
This concept has just been published in two journals even being magazine cover in the “Journal of Materials Chemistry A”.
