Pedro Ferreira developed work around an innovative medical imaging technique on breast cancer detection, breast tomosynthesis. Currently there are methods for image reconstruction that take a long time to be used in clinic. Pedro has developed a method to reduce the amount of radiation received by the patients today in these tests.
With this work Pedro Ferreira won first the prize in the academic world competition (Worldwide Acadmic Competition) Future of Ideas (Future Ideas Worldwide Academic Competition) in the "Health Future" (Future of Health) area. The Future Ideas help fresh graduates to launch or enhance his career and his network allowing contact with some of the best thinkers in the world. By organizing the Worldwide Academic Competition, Future Ideas intends to bridge the gap between the best talent in the world and the business world through academic knowledge. They believe that new graduates with creative minds are the key to a better future. The prize consists of € 1,000 in cash, three sessions with mentors (some of the best thinkers in the world) and a publication in the research journal Future Ideas "Ideas for the Future".
This work began with Pedro's Master thesis in Biomedical Engineering from the Faculty of Science and Technology, New University of Lisbon (FCT-UNL), and in which Peter worked as a researcher at the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering (IBEB ), Faculty of Science, University of Lisbon (FCUL), in partnership with the NOVA-LINCS (Research Center in Computer Engineering at FCT-NOVA) where he was supervised by Professor Nuno Matela from the IBEB and FCUL and Professor Pedro Medeiros from NOVA-LINCS.
