The Caparica Coast will serve as an example and test for the establishment of an early warning system for sea wave situations where the sea can climb the coast.
The objective of this system is the creation of an early warning system of at least six hours, directed to the competent authorities, to the coast and to the ports that enables the taking of preventive measures. FCT-UNL’s Professor José Carlos Ferreira, coordinator of the “Hidralerta” project, participated in the Coast Working Group (LPG), created by the Portuguese Ministry of Environment, more specifically in the report which is the basis for the new "Strategy for Portugal’s Coastal Zone on Climate Change Scenarios ". The next phase of this project will take place after September 2015, when work will be done with the Civil Protection and other authorities to outline the implementation strategy.
