José Luis Capelo and Carlos Lodeiro, co-leaders of the BIOSCOPE group at UCIBIO and professors at FCT/UNL, are the chairmen of the 1st International Caparica Conference in Antibiotic Resistance that will take place between 26 and 28th of January 2015. The opening session will be on Monday, 26thJanuary at 8:45 AM.
The antibiotic resistance is spreading out quicker than the introduction of new drugs, causing a serious problem in public health due to the possibility in therapeutic failure. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognized the emergence and propagation of antimicrobial resistance as a serious problem worldwide, affecting both developed and developing countries. Many scientists, at international level, are fully dedicated to various lines of research in this area, including the study of the mechanisms of antibacterial resistance and dissemination, and getting new drugs acting on new targets.
On 26, 27 and 28 of January, more than 120 international scientists involved in antibiotic resistance prevention and control, will get together to discuss many topics, including rise of antimicrobial resistance and epidemiology- concerns on pathogen resistance and public health, genetics of antimicrobial resistance, proteomics of antimicrobial resistance, the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in animals, antimicrobial resistance in animal pathogens and its exchange with humans, how antimicrobial resistance may be affected by the use of antibiotics in food and agriculture, mechanisms of antibacterial resistance, organizing antibiotic surveillance, policies to stimulate drug development and discovery, alternative strategies to overcome the problem of antimicrobial resistance worldwide, control of resistant infections.
