A team from the Faculty of Science and Technology, New University of Lisbon (“Eggy”) composed by 3 students (Rui Lopes, Pedro Ferreira and Joaquim Fonseca ) and 2 teachers ( António Grilo from the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department and João Martins from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department ) won EDP’s Internet of Things Challenge organized by EDP Innovation. Starting from an Electric Imp platform - which allows a series of electrical systems to connect to the internet and that was the basis for this challenge made by EDP to 11 institutions of higher education - a small egg-shaped device was created that, when placed in a refrigerator or washing machine, measures consumption and suggests changes that result in energy savings . The results of the savings are automatically transmitted and shared in an online platform, named "Egg 's Nest " , where an environment " similar to a social network " can generate competitions savings , to see who is more efficient in meeting the goals . The success of these challenges, result in obtaining points ( " Eggoins " ) that can be used to purchase products in defined partners.
