The presence of nitrogen and phosphorus in surface water is the main cause of cultural eutrophication (enhanced by human activity), accelerating its degradation and interfering with their uses, including the production of water intended for human consumption, and causing significant economic losses. Biological nutrient removal is considered one of the most important advances in the biological treatment of urban wastewater since the early beginning of the activated sludge process, and their use should take into account, in addition to environmental ethics and compliance with rules, that it allows a more stable process concerning the removal of carbonaceous matter.
