Research scholarship in the framework of MERIS project

24-07-2012

This call is addressed to a marine biologist willing to support the analysis of results within a research program for the validation of data products from the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) satellite in different European seas. This project is carried on by the CENTRIA center of the Department of Informatics, New University of Lisbon, campus of Monte de Caparica and will be supervised by Dr. Davide D’Alimonte. Candidates must have a background in phytoplankton species composition and a solid know-how on the application of bio-optical algorithms for the validation of data products from the European Space Agency (ESA) Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT). Additional skills in statistics and Matlab programming will be very much appreciated. Job tasks focuses on the interpretation, from a biological perspective, of field measurements collected in the Atlantic off Portugal in spring 2011. Examples of specific questions to be addressed concerns how validation results (i.e., comparison between satellite data products and in-situ observations) depends on: 1) seawater bio-optical type, 2) vertical distribution of chlorophyll concentration, and possibly 3) the impact of phytoplankton physiological state and composition. The foreseen start of the grant will be the 15th of August. The duration of the grant is nine months, 745€ per month plus social security. Interested candidates should send until the 31th of July 2012 an e-mail with subject “call scholarship MERIS” with motivation letter and curriculum vitae to davide.dalimonte@gmail.com

Candidates may be called for interview during the first week of August.
