The Master’s in Aerospace Engineering reinforces the role of aerospace engineering in a more sustainable and intelligent future, expanding the possibilities of space exploration.

This Master’s program offers two scientific specialization areas: Avionics Systems and Aerospace Mechanics.

Graduates in Aerospace Engineering acquire a unique combination of fundamental skills in advanced science and technology, enabling easy adaptation to the constant evolution of aerospace processes.

With a highly multidisciplinary program and a strong experimental component, the Master’s in Aerospace Engineering includes various UAVs of different topologies, several fixed and mobile robots, experimental microwave and antenna systems, a 9m wind tunnel, various mechanical testing machines, high-efficiency solar lasers, a cryogenic vacuum chamber (77 K-300 K) with a 159 litres capacity, among other laboratory equipment.

Why this Master's?

  • It addresses challenges involving spacecraft and aircraft in terms of control, guidance and navigation; electronics and telecommunications; structures, aerodynamics, and propulsion.
  • This program provides solid advanced training, producing highly qualified graduates for national and international positions in the aerospace industry, governmental agencies, and academia.
  • The main supporting research units are rated “Excellent” and ensure access to a wide range of specific and innovative laboratory equipment.
  • There is regular collaboration with national universities (University of Lisbon, University of Beira Interior, University of Minho, University of Porto, University of Aveiro, University of Coimbra, University of Évora, among others) and international universities (TU Delft, University of Cologne, University of Mons, University of Tampere, Sorbonne University, among others). PhD students have been co-supervised with Carnegie Mellon, UT Austin, IMT Lucca, TU Kaiserslautern, Wright University, Columbia University, UFRGS.
  • The program features contributions from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of NOVA FCT, leveraging excellence in research and innovation activities of institutions and companies within the NOVA FCT ecosystem.
  • The curriculum also includes the development of transversal skills such as self-confidence, career autonomy, teamwork, research and information selection, and communication.
  • The teaching staff boasts over 35 years of experience in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering and Management.

Program

This Master’s program offers two scientific specialization areas: Avionics Systems and Aerospace Mechanics. These areas are aligned with strong and solid knowledge bases that enable the training of engineers with advanced qualifications, ready to enter the aerospace sector (both national and international) or to advance to advanced research programs (PhD).

At the end of the study cycle, the knowledge and skills developed include:

  • Aircraft and avionics design and integration
  • Flight dynamics, operations, and communications
  • Fluid dynamics and aerodynamics
  • Design of structures, materials, and propulsion systems, as well as production and sustainability
  • Space technology and applications

Curriculum

For whom

  • Holders of a Bachelor's degree (BsC) or legal equivalent in the fields of Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Physics Engineering, Technological Physics Engineering, or related fields.
  • Holders of a Bachelor's degree (BsC) or legal equivalent in the fields of Engineering or Science in general, with admission to the program subject to curriculum evaluation and interview.
  • Holders of a higher academic degree from a foreign institution, awarded after a first cycle of studies in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process in the aforementioned areas.
  • Individuals with an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that is recognized as demonstrating the capacity to undertake this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCT.
  • Candidates with similar backgrounds will be evaluated based on their curriculum and professional experience. All candidates must be approved by the scientific committee and may be subject to an interview to assess their preparation and motivation for the Master's program.

Founded in 1993, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) is a teaching and research unit of NOVA FCT dedicated to advancement, research, quality education, and providing the community with specialized services in the field of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
