12-12-2022

The EMPORIA4KT- INTERREG Atlantic Area project, from NOVA School of Science and Technology, has been awarded the 2022 Atlantic Project Award for the "Blue Skills and Ocean Literacy" category.

The Atlantic Project Awards, promoted by the Atlantic Strategy Committee, UE, feature outstanding initiatives, successful collaborations and achievements relevant to the implementation of the Atlantic Action Plan 2.0. These projects have taken place within the EU Atlantic over the past year and showcase best practices and partnership models that could be scaled up at the regional, national, European and international level.

"The award reinforces the validity of the project’s knowledge transfer approach to promoting innovation within the blue economy at the regional level. This support is particularly encouraging as EMPORIA4KT enters its final half-year," explains Sofia Dinis-Esteves, project manager.“This award will facilitate and contribute to the capitalisation of the results achieved so far by EMPORIA4KT project and the current application of these tools to transform and revitalize a region affected by a natural disaster (Canary Islands), which will together enhance the potential of the expected medium and long-term impacts of promoting innovation and technology transfer activities within the blue economy,” she adds.

This was the first Atlantic Area Interreg Project of the European Union to be coordinated by FCT NOVA. António Grilo, Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and researcher at UNIDEMI, was the coordinator, with the active collaboration of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering/MARE, the Department of Applied Social Sciences/CIUHCT  and IRIS

The consortium, composed of 17 partners from five European countries in the Atlantic Area, aimed to work towards establishing links between academia, business and government in order to promote innovation and competitiveness in the Blue Economy in the Atlantic Area.
