The Caparica campus of the NOVA School of Science and Technology was awarded the Eco Schools Green Flag for the first time, distinguishing the Faculty for its efforts and commitments to become more sustainable.

The Eco-School distinction, awarded by the Blue Flag of Europe Association (ABAE), corresponds to the recognition of the work developed by Sustainable FCT NOVA, in the pursuit of a Sustainable Campus through the involvement of all school actors in a collaborative sustainability strategy .

The School explored initiatives in various areas of activity, such as Waste, Water, Energy, Outdoor Spaces, Healthy and Sustainable Food, Involvement and Awareness, highlighting:

  • The expansion of the ecopoint network inside and outside campus buildings;
  • The installation of drinking fountains on the campus and the promotion of the campaign “Bring your canteen”, as a measure to promote the consumption of unbottled water and reduce the packaging of disposable plastic bottles;
  • The installation of semi-fast charging stations for electric vehicles on campus;
  • The creation of the private group of rides, created in partnership with Via Verde Serviços;
  • The constitution of the FCT NOVA Sustentável task force, composed of members representing all sectors of the school (Departments, Research Centers, Services and Students);
  • The publication of the “Guide to Good Practices” and a “Brief Portrait of Sustainability at the Caparica Campus”, both available on the website (only in portuguese);
  • The promotion of awareness-raising and involvement with natural spaces, promoted by the NAS - Center for Environment and Sustainability, which includes hiking in protected areas, beach cleaning meetings, broadcasting documentaries, holding gatherings and workshops, among others.

The NOVA School of Science and Technology will continue to work to renew this distinction, with more activities and ambitious goals, in order to make our community and our campus progressively more sustainable.
