Paula Sobral, professor and researcher at FCT NOVA, was one of five invited speakers at the third edition of the National Geographic Summit.
The meeting took place last April 29 at Casa da Música in Oporto under the theme "Planet or Plastic" and was sold out.
In the lecture "Saving Our Seas From Plastic Pollution," the researcher was the "voice of microplastics." With a long research career in the field, Paula Sobral spoke about the origins of the problem and the socio-economic and environmental impacts. In the end the researcher left the audience with a question: "Do I really need this in plastic?".
Paula Sobral is one of the founders and the President of the Portuguese Association Lixo Marinho, a member of GESAMP (Joint Group of Experts on Marine Environmental Protection - United Nations) and has collaborated with various institutions and government agencies in the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive .
The researcher has been studying micro-plastics and marine litter since 2008 and has been at the forefront of pioneering projects in this area. It currently coordinates at the national level the intergovernmental research projects BASEMAN (Microplastics Analysis in European Waters) and PLASTOX (Direct and indirect ecotoxicological impacts of microplastics on marine organisms).
Paula Sobral is a professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering and a researcher at MARE.
