AMIR, Advanced Materials and Innovative Recycling is a Master programme accredited by EIT (European Institute of Technology) and taught by a consortium of 6 European universities.
This programme explores the Raw Materials value chain, emphasising Recycling and its role in the Circular Economy of Materials and natural resources.
This Master’s objective is to prepare highly qualified professionals, providing them an encompassing experience in different issues related to Raw Materials, while promoting an entrepreneurial spirit by close contact with companies, incubators and innovation services.
AMIR provides the student with the concepts and tools required to assess the sustainability of products and processes, thus promoting innovative approaches towards sustainable production. It seeks to combine the knowledge about Advanced Materials, used to develop intelligent production of goods and equipment, with a macroscale understanding of Complex Systems Engineering, incorporating the assessment of environmental, economic and social impacts on the decision-making process.
There are 3 ingress paths for AMIR: Erasmus Mundus; EIT, NOVA FCT.
According to the path chosen, the students may be eligible for a Dual Diploma, granted by two distinct universities:
Students are granted a scholarship (> 33 000€) covering academic fees and taxes, travel, accommodation and other expenses. The students must attend two different universities in countries other than their country of origin. Upon graduation, a dual diploma is granted by the universities attended.
Further information concerning the AMIR Erasmus Mundus path may be found at: AMIR Erasmus Mundus : Master in Advanced Materials: Innovative Recycling - Erasmus EM Mundus

In Year 1, students will acquire knowledge concerning the factors affecting the Raw Materials values chain – including chemistry, materials science, material and product life cycle – as well as the learning outcomes of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT): sustainability, intellectual transformation, value judgements (ethical, scientific and sustainability challenges), creativity, innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship.
In year 2 students will specialise in a study field of choice (Materials Design for Recycling; Metallurgy and Metal Recycling; Circular Economy of Building Materials) with one of AMIR’s three Year 2 partner universities, followed by an internship with a research organisation, industrial partner or academic partner. This part of the programme allows students the opportunity to attend specialized courses on subjects like Energy, e-Mobility, Transportation and Environmental Sciences).
Tuition fee - Portuguese students: 2000 € / year
Tuition fee - Foreign students: 7000 € / year
Accepted candidates will be required to pay (within 7 consecutive days from the placement date) a non-refundable fee of €100, which will be deducted from the total tuition fee after enrolment.
Non-payment within this period will result in automatic exclusion of the candidate. No exceptions or late payments will be considered. Any payment made after the deadline will not be refunded, and the candidate will remain excluded.
The Department of Materials Science (DCM) of NOVA FCT has unique laboratory infrastructures in Portugal, internationally recognized, which, together with the excellent teaching for which we strive, have allowed us to train Materials Engineers with high scientific and technical quality.
